Field Trips Engage Students in Discovery-based Experiences

We kicked off October by welcoming two schools for the first field trips at the museum. We’ve partnered with the Butt-Holdsworth Memorial Library to offer engaging learning experiences across the library campus. All field trips are offered for free thanks to a grant from The Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country.

Students from the Hill Country Micro School and 4th graders from Tally Elementary played, discovered, and learned what makes Kerr County history unique. Since before the museum opened, we have planned to offer field trips to local and regional schools as part of the Heritage Center’s commitment to promoting Kerr County’s history and cultural heritage to our young Texans. The Heritage Center exhibits were developed with school-aged students interests and Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills in mind to ensure that all field trip experiences connect with school curriculum and educational objectives.

Out of school experiences give students an opportunity to connect with the real world and the people and stories who have made substantial impacts throughout history. The power of museum field trips comes from the opportunity for students to learn in a new and unique environment where stories and diverse perspectives come to life through images, artifacts, and first-hand accounts. Museums also offer students tactile experiences that engage multiple senses to activate the brain to make connections in different ways than through traditional classroom experiences.

We are fortunate to have incredible partners and volunteers that bring the history to life for the students. The students enjoy small group learning experiences during the field trip. The staff at the library lead a fun and fast-paced scavenger hunt for the students. Volunteers at the Heritage Center facilitate artifact analysis activities for students to engage their observational skills and senses to determine the use of historical objects that are no longer commonly used. Clifton Fifer, Joshua D. Brown Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, and the Hill Country Archeological Association lead discussions in our exhibits and invite the students to explore our history through hands-on experiences. The field trip offers something for every type of learner and engages various senses in discovering Kerr County history.

Thank you to The Community Foundation for sponsoring our first year of field trips by providing FREE admission for students and staff. We could not do this without their support!
