We’re hiring a part-time, reliable, community-oriented individual to serve as Community Engagement Specialist. The position is an 18-month contract position funded by Rebuild Kerr and the Community Impact Fund through the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country. The position will work collaboratively with me and community partners to develop, facilitate, and promote school field trips and flood recovery programs and gatherings to aid in healing and recovery. This person will have a chance to develop new, impactful programs for our community and must be willing to work some early evening and weekend events occasionally. Job Title: Community Engagement Specialist
Job Type: Part time – 18-month contract, not to exceed 28 hrs/week @$18/hour, scheduled as needed
Work Schedule: Weekday and weekend availability required. Work shifts vary and require on-site work at the Heritage Center during open hours Tuesday-Saturday 10am-4pm and off-site on select Sundays and after-hours programs held at the Heritage Center and various locations throughout Kerr County. Reliable transportation is required.

Position Summary: The Heart of the Hills Heritage Center seeks a part-time, reliable, community-oriented individual to serve as Community Engagement Specialist. The position is an 18-month contract position funded by Rebuild Kerr and the Community Impact Fund through the Community Foundation of the Texas Hill Country. The position will work in collaboration with the Executive Director of the Heart of the Hills Heritage Center and community partners to develop, facilitate, and promote school field trips and flood recovery programs and gatherings to aid in healing and recovery after catastrophic flooding severely impacted Kerr County.
The Community Engagement Specialist will devote 20 hours/week to work collaboratively with the Executive Director and community partners on developing a suite of Flood Recovery Programs to invite those who were affected by the flood to engage in community workshops with one another in powerful, communal healing activities. Using the power of community to aid in healing, these workshops will provide an open-door for those seeking alternatives to mental health services. Programs such as Story Circles, Family Memory Book Workshops, non-fiction writing workshops, scent creation workshops, and other reflective programs will contribute to residents processing loss, preserving family history, and contributing to a collective narrative of resilience. Each program will provide an opportunity for participants to create something, whether it be a story, signature scent, quilt square, memory book, or other product that contributes to healing and recovery. Depending on the program, participants may share their creative product with the community through the Flood Archive that the Heritage Center is developing, an exhibit, or another form to be determined.
The Specialist will devote 8 hours/week to developing, planning, and tracking all school field trips to the Heritage Center in the 2026-2027 school year. This work will be supported by community partners and volunteers leading activities during each 2-hour field trip. Funding will cover student and teacher admission fees, a portion of the cost of bus transportation, and supplies and materials used in active learning stations.
Essential Tasks
- Collaborate with the Executive Director and community partners to develop, facilitate, and promote school field trips and flood recovery programs to Kerr County communities
- Attend and facilitate each flood recovery program, assisted by volunteers to support larger turnouts
- Undergo training for Flood Recovery Programs facilitation
- Engage with community members, organizations, and stakeholders to foster collaboration and participation in programs, and ensure access to available resources
- Communicate effectively through social media, public relations, and other communication channels to promote programs and maintain engagement
- Maintain records, track engagement metrics, and report on the effectiveness of school field trips and flood recovery programs
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in education, communications, marketing, English, nonprofit management, or related fields.
- Work or volunteer experience in formal or informal education, community engagement, marketing, and general administrative duties
- Experience working with school-aged children in a setting such as school, summer camp, after school programs, etc.
- Experience using Google Suite, Canva, Adobe Suite, Microsoft Office Suite
- Experience interfacing with community members and promoting available resources and upcoming events
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Skills in the use of standard office equipment and software
- Ability to work semi-independently, under moderate supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment
- Ability to handle multiple tasks, set priorities, and exercise professional judgment
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Ability to work in a team environment
- Ability to use sound judgment and pivot before, during, and after programs to respond to community members’ needs and make adjustments that best suit the needs of all stakeholders, community, participants, volunteers, and the organization
Environmental/Physical Conditions
Normal office work environment. Mostly sedentary in nature but may involve moving; standing; pulling and pushing; kneeling, stooping, and bending; setting up tables and chairs for programs; performing tasks requiring fine and large motor skills and coordination to safely move items weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be able to work extended periods at a computer. Will require meeting with community partners at various locations throughout Kerr County. Normal cognitive abilities include the ability to learn, recall, and apply certain practices and policies and interpret data. May require extended working hours and some evenings and weekends at community events at various locations (indoors and outdoors) as needed. Must have reliable transportation.
